Accounting for mobile app
Design | Research
Overview
The mobile application discovery and initial designs were already rolling when I first joined. What I would learn as I sat in on a few discovery calls was the specific features and the ability for executives to complete key processes while on the go.
In order to help reach our ambitious deadline I took on the accounting part of the application in close collaboration with our contractor who had started the project.
Challenges
A problem we ran into was property selection and product features. Certain features on the web support an “all” properties view while others require a single property view. Initial designs did not take this into account and an update of the IA and user flows was needed. We collaborated internally for the best option to match our users expectations and the current web app.
Another task was defining scope of the product. Many flows have sub flows that allow you to create a new vendor, add a new contract, etc and we needed to set a clear line for how this app would function for the MVP. Internal discussions and user interviews gave us our answers of the most used and requested on-the-go features. For example, the ability to create a new invoice and take a picture of an invoice was crucial. Another area we could draw the line was the full payment approval process. Users gave us feedback that knowing the status of a payment was most critical though future phases we would allow full functionality.
Conclusion
Through design and development collaboration we honed in on a successful IA allowing us to utilize alerts on the home screen and funnel users down to features with very little friction.
